The obituaries we read about famous people are lively and fascinating—narratives of their remarkable accomplishments and assessments of their impact on the world. These articles are filled with poignant quotations from experts and friends and often include poignant anecdotes that have broader meaning. How come we don’t write in the same way about our loved ones who aren’t famous but nonetheless have left indelible marks on their communities, family members, and friends? In this class, students will learn about the structure and key characteristics of obituaries, gain guidance in crafting questions they can ask their loved one or the people who know that person well, and then start drafting an obituary.
