0006) GENDER REVEAL: EXPLORING THE CONNECTION BETWEEN FASHION & GENDER

Clothes are the most public and intimate declarations of our identities. They tell countless stories: from our occupation to class to religion to heritage. Perhaps most profoundly, clothes tell the story of our gender. In this way, fashion and gender are inextricably linked. Living in a culture that worships hyperfemininity (as performed by, say, Kim Kardashian or Marilyn Monroe) and hypermasculinity (as performed by, say, The Rock) while at the same time beginning to embrace nonbinary identities and/or aesthetics (Janelle Monae, Sam Smith, Jonathan Van Ness, Alok Vaid Menon), it is important to understand not just that clothes can uphold or transgress gender expectations, but why. Drawing from various cultures and points in history, this class will explore how fashion and the expression of gender have been affected by laws, cultural mores, trade routes, marketing schemes, and so much more.
