Denise Asfar’s eclectic interests have inspired her wide-ranging experience in Languages, Literature, Drama and Musical Theater. She holds an M.A. from Brown University in Teaching; and CT teaching certificates in French, Latin, and English—subjects she has taught at the secondary-school and university level, most recently at Westminster Choir College. In her long experience at the Princeton Adult School, she has developed and taught over 30 new courses—in French language and literature, Latin and classical literature, French and Italian opera, and Shakespeare. She holds an honors B.A. from Princeton University (Romance Languages and Literature, minor in Classics/Latin), where she was awarded the Alden Prize for her essay on Camus’s Noces, and performed in plays of Shakespeare and Molière.
At ETS (Educational Testing Service) for over 30 years, she developed material for tests of students and teachers of French, Latin, Italian, Music, and Theater; and directed recordings of professional voice-over actors for multi-media testing programs in English and foreign languages.
Her publications and essays include: Teachers’ materials for textbooks in French language instruction; theater and music articles for local newspapers (The Princeton Packet’s Time Off, Princeton University’s Daily Princetonian); a translation (with Gabriel Asfar) of Musiques Cubaines; and a New Yorker-sponsored short story contest-winner, “A Case of La Grande Dame.”
