Bruce Costa is founder and chief instructor for Granite Forest Dojo, established in Upper Bucks County, PA in 2002. He has practiced Shotokan Karate since 1980 and taught since 1996, emphasizing the involvement of beginners of any age or condition. Sensei Costa codified this emphasis in his recent book, “Welcome to Karate: Unlocking the Wisdom of the Beginners Mind,” published in 2021.
Costa is a passionate teacher, successful entrepreneur, active public speaker, and student of mindfulness meditation in the tradition of Zen Master Thích Nhất Hạnh, with whom he has studied since 2007. He has authored over 250 magazine column installments, feature articles, interviews, and book reviews for a variety of magazines, newspapers, and other periodicals. In addition to his weekly classes for beginners through advanced students he has taught other groups large and small, from graduate students at MIT’s Sloan School to three-year-old children at private preschools.
