Lectures: Tues., 7:00–8:30 pm, Oct. 13, 20, 2 sessions PHS Field Trip: Sat., 11:00 am–12:00 pm, Oct. 24, 1 session (see note for location)
“Hoop houses” or high tunnels are inexpensive enclosures that farmers and home gardeners use to grow crops through the winter, usually without supplementary heat. These can be built and maintained on a small backyard scale to provide fresh vegetables through the winter. In the first session, participants will learn how to design, permit, and build a backyard hoop house suitable for Central New Jersey. In a second session, participants will learn which cold-hardy crops thrive in winter (e.g., greens, root vegetables), along with planting schedules and harvesting techniques. Additional topics will include composting, soil health, and integrating food production into a green lifestyle. The final field trip session will be a backyard visit to a residential-scale hoop house, outdoor gardens, and other elements of a “net zero” home. Participants will travel independently to a Hopewell Township residence (address provided prior to class). The visit will be outdoors. Participants should dress appropriately for weather and uneven ground. Group discussion will be encouraged. Participants will be able to develop their own hoop house design, materials list, and seasonal planting plan. Prior gardening experience is encouraged, but not required.
NOTE: The field trip will be held at a Hopewell Township residence and the address will be provided to students at class time.
