From the silk roads of Kanchipuram to the cotton fields of Gujarat, learn the history, craft, and story of Indian textiles. Feel the fibers, view the looms, understand the alchemy of the dyes. Learn about the drape of the sari and the dhoti. Students will use hand-carved blocks to print their own repeating pattern—no drawing skills necessary. The class culminates with an in-class fabric salon—a bazaar of 15–20 textiles—in which the students decode fabric tags and share stories.
