Building on foundational drawing skills, this class challenges students to deepen their understanding of the human figure through observation and interpretation. Emphasis will be placed on drawing the figure from live models with increasing attention to anatomy, proportion, and expressive intent. Students will explore more advanced concepts including lighting the model, staging dynamic poses, creating contrast and dramatic value relationships, and using light and shadow to define form and mood. Exercises will emphasize gesture drawing, dynamic compositions, and expressive mark-making to strengthen both technical ability and personal style. The class will include group discussions designed to refine observational skills and encourage creative growth. On the first day of class, please bring one sample of artwork that you admire.
NOTE: Supplies—charcoal or Conte crayon, newsprint, clipboard, and kneaded eraser.
