Picture books may be short, but they’re not easy to write! A picture book is a unified artistic whole in which text and pictures, covers and end pages, and details of design work together, and provide an aes-thetically satisfying experience for young readers, their teachers, their caregivers, and others. Picture books are also an art designed to be read aloud — to be performed. This four-week workshop explores the form through fiction and nonfiction. Writing exercises focus on char-acterization, story structure, setting, and point-of-view. Participants are encouraged to expand their creative thinking to develop their own unique narrative voice. The goal is to leave with 3–5 ideas for picture books, one draft, and a working understanding of the publishing process.
