Best known abroad for his commanding novels, Dostoevsky (1821–1881) is the author of equally powerful novellas and stories that showcase his psychological acumen and fierce engagement with sociopolitical issues debated across Europe and Russia in his time. This course focuses on a set of stylistically varied works that span Dostoevsky’s creative career and demonstrate his mastery of the short form. Recommended text: Great Short Works of Fyodor Dostoevsky (Perennial Classics, 2004).
