Over the course of five sessions, we will explore the key events and developments of nineteenth century America which grew from a small overwhelmingly rural republic, hemmed in by the Appalachian Mountains, to a continent-spanning, industrial nation on the verge of becoming a world power. We will try and understand the century on its own terms, but also seek to uncover what clues it may tell us about who we are today and how we got here.
