011) Wanderlust: Exploring the World from Inside Our Houses through Travel Memoirs

In the time of COVID, many of us find ourselves bored, frustrated, isolated, and, frankly, stuck. In these exceptional times, when it is impossible to travel in person, we must rely on imagination and living vicariously through other people’s adventures. This course will take us on a world tour through places around the globe, reading travel memoirs by people who have experienced them as our guides. As we go, we will reflect on just what it is that makes humans want to move about, how travel writing expresses cultural difference, and the impacts of those expressions on how we understand the world. We begin the adventure with Noe Alverez’s Spirit Run. The instructor will email students before the start of classes with a reading assignment.
