In honor of America’s 250th birthday, this course will exam-
ine the largest battle of the Revolutionary War (1775-83). In
the late-summer of 1777, a British army commanded by Sir
William Howe landed in Maryland and proceeded to advance north, threatening the capital of the Revolution, Philadelphia. Gen. Washington had no choice but to contest this advance, even though he was fully aware of the shortcomings of the forces he led. We’ll see how the resulting battle unfolded.
