421) Introduction to Bee Keeping

 The course will take place at an active apiary. Safety equipment will be provided. The course is taught in an open hive format allowing students to get hands-on experience with the beehives. Students will learn to: identify the different components of a standard 10 frame Langstroth hive, use beekeeping tools such as the smoker, hive tool, and safety equipment; identify workers, drones, and the queen; identify honey, pollen, and brood cells; understand how bees navigate to nectar sources and how bees communicate in the hive.
