The course will take place at an active apiary. Safety equipment will be provided. The course is taught in an open hive format allowing students to get hands-on experience with the beehives. Students will learn to: identify the different components of a standard 10 frame Langstroth hive, use beekeeping tools such as the smoker, hive tool, and safety equipment; identify workers, drones, and the queen; identify honey, pollen, and brood cells; understand how bees navigate to nectar sources and how bees communicate in the hive.
