In the 1960s Mr. Stevens was a Drama Fellow at Bennington College, VT. In the '70s he worked for the Smithsonian Division of Performing Arts, first as director of the Children's Theater on the Mall, then as director of the Smithsonian touring puppet theater, and was also director of he Smithsonian's resident puppet theater (now the Discovery Theater) for four years. His puppet figures have been displayed in major galleries across the country, including the Rapunzelexhibit at National Museum of Women in the Arts in 2001. He has participated in more than 20,000 theatrical performances as producer, designer, director, and/or actor, with special emphasis on family audiences. he is co-founder of the Puppet Co. and was recently director of "Capital Fireworks," a regional puppetry festival held at University of Maryland, College Park in 2008.
