Annetta Dexter Sawyer has performed her whole life. She trained in Verona, Italy as a child star for L’Arena Opera seasons, became a life-long member of the Kirov, acted in every school play, and has trained in physical theater, clown, buffoon, and performance art! She’s an awarded teaching artist with the Arts & Humanities Council of Montgomery County where she’s also on the MCPS Teaching Artist Roster. Ms. Dexter Sawyer is also an awarded poet-in-residence for the Arlington Humanities Project visiting pre K & K – 12 grades. Most recently she’s been awarded a residency with the Folger Shakespeare Library for their Secondary Shakespeare Festival. She’s been a professor at Trinity College, DC teaching Fine Arts, Dance/Movement, and Performance. She often teaches Interdisciplinary Studies/Arts Integration for Montgomery College & has taught in their Dance/Theater department. For over a decade she’s been with AFTA (Arts for the Aging) giving classes in Healing Movement, Art for Everyone, & Theater/Improvisation. Sawyer devises her original theatre pieces that speak to her personal experience through choreography, spoken word, props, and projected imagery. Her classes at Glen Echo focus on improvisation and the special skills this spontaneous form elicits. Classes are intergenerational and revolve around each participant’s personal creative exploration whether it be movement-based, image-based, physical theater or acting.
