Art History: Symbolism Crosscurrents in European Painting (Keel)

A broad international movement, Symbolism rejected the naturalist depiction of reality and sought an art that would, in the words of poet Jean Moréas, “clothes the idea in sensuous form.” In this course, we will study various forms of Symbolist art, as practiced by Gustave Moreau (France), Edward Burne-Jones (England), Fernand Khnopff (Belgium), Ferdinand Hodler (Switzerland), and Gustav Klimt (Austria).
