This November marks 250 years since one of the most consequential retreats of the Revolutionary War, following the twin battles of Fort Washington and Fort Lee. We’ll retrace it on foot, starting in Fort Lee Historic Park, as we take in the gorgeous views along and across the Hudson River and talk about the battle, then cross by foot over the George Washington Bridge. A few blocks north is the site of Fort Washington, which was sacked by the British on November 16, 1776. On November 19 and 20, the British crossed the Hudson and took Fort Lee, narrowly missing capture of General Washington, who had evacuated just hours earlier. About 4 miles round trip (half that if you taxi back). If you are energetic, you can take a short (but steep) diversion to something "fat and red and jolly" -- no, not Santa Claus, but the "Little Red Lighthouse" of the famous 1940s children's book, which sits under the bridge on the NY side. When arriving back in Fort Lee, stay to enjoy the reenactment festivities surrounding Retreat Dat at Fort Lee Historic Park, including artillery and music demonstrations and to tour the museum.
