Music has been an important part of a film's success, image, ambiance, and story-telling almost since the very first films. During the so-called "silent film" era, there was still musical accompaniment ranging from a solo pianist to a full symphonic orchestra. Once a synchronized sound-track was perfected, the musical score became even more prominent, ranging from symphonic orchestras to popular selections. From 1920 through 1980, several composers have created scores that have become as familiar as the films themselves. Composers to be discussed include Max Steiner, Franz Waxman, Bernard Herrmann, Henry Mancini, John Williams and others. Video examples will be included.
