The 1940s could be divided exactly into two halves: The War Years 1940-1945 and the Post-War Years 1945-1950. In many ways, music during the war years continued in the styles of the late 1930s with the emphasis on big band swing. However, at the same time, there were signs of change in music as there were in society at large. We will explore some of the changes in the musical world, including: "The Golden Age” of Broadway, the growth in popularity of singers such as Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, and Ella Fitzgerald, the new “honky tonk sound” of country music and the shift to Nashville as the center of the music world, and the movement in jazz from big band swing to be-bop and cool styles.
