BK-ND) Natural Dyeing 101

Dyeing can be a great way to bring a stained dress back into rotation, or bring to life all that white yarn hanging out at home. And it's even more exciting if we only use natural dyes! In 4 sessions you will learn the principles of dyeing fabric and yarn with beautiful colors using only natural dyes. Questions like “what is a dye”, “where can I find dyes in Nature”, “what is a mordant” will be addressed and a brief overview of the history of dyeing and techniques will be given. Each student will experiment with dyeing different fibers using the most famous natural dyes, such as madder, weld, cochineal and the mysterious indigo. Students will also learn how to obtain different shades of color from the same dye. Everyone will be encouraged to experiment with some resist dyeing techniques, such as tie-dye or shibori. Students are also welcome to bring additional materials they’d like to experiment with! View student work here

No experience necessary. Our classes are designed to focus on a learned skill rather than a final product. At TAC, our mission is to provide skills and knowledge for a lifetime!
