About Us Founded in 1933 as a beacon of hope during the Great Depression, The South Orange-Maplewood Adult School has given our community education, enlightenment, and enjoyment for 77 years. The Adult School is a nonprofit educational organization that offers a wide array of affordable, high-quality classes, lectures, and trips to more than 1,600 local residents each semester.
The Adult School helps the members of our community lead fuller lives. They learn practical skills, discuss politics and social issues, renew their creative spirit, fulfill dreams of playing an instrument or speaking a new language, learn to dance, travel, and so much more. Thousands of residents eagerly anticipate each session’s offerings that add enjoyment and meaning to their lives.
In addition to our wide-range of adult classes, the school provides free ESL and ABE/GED programs that help members of our communities achieve a brighter future. More than 900 individuals a year are served by this critical program. In the summer the school offers a highly touted children’s enrichment camp, the South Orange-Maplewood Community Summer Program.
