PARAMUS STIGMA-FREE ZONE TASK FORCE
March 31, 2014
Dear Members of the Paramus Community,
A committee of concerned Paramus residents, employees, and volunteers has been created to help educate our town about mental illness in order to create a community that is a Stigma-Free Zone. What that means is that we care about those children and adults and their families who are suffering with mental illness, and we want them to feel comfortable about seeking treatment without feeling any shame or fear of rejection. Mental illness is just that – an illness. It is treatable and it affects us all in some way. It can no longer be ignored and whispered about, but rather acknowledged and dealt with in a caring and educated way.
Mayor Richard LaBarbiera and the Paramus Council have passed a Resolution declaring Paramus a Stigma-Free Zone, and now we must make that happen. With the Mayor’s help, we are off to a great start. We have had an immensely successful lawn sign blitz to create interest and start a dialogue. Materials with mental health information and resources have been created and distributed. We have created an excellent website, Facebook page, and Twitter account (thanks to Care Plus NJ & Caryl Felicetta). We have trained 30 Paramus school staff members on Youth First Aid for Mental Health (again thanks to Care Plus NJ). In January, we had a most heart-warming and entertaining premier dance performance of “Let’s Help” at Paramus Park by 65 dancers from Paramus High School, Center Stage Dance Studio, Miss Mariann’s School of Dance, and guest dancers from Ridgewood High School.
Currently, we are working on a Town Hall Meeting: “Let’s Talk.” It will be held in the auditorium of Paramus High School on Thursday evening, May 8th, at 7:00PM. This is YOUR opportunity to get involved and become part of the solution to our mental
health crisis. Please mark your calendars and join us for this important educational event.
