The Fine Art of Travel Photography

We’ve all seen photographs of the Eiffel Tower, the Taj Mahal and the Great Wall of China. But great travel photographs are not simply about the destination. Rather, the truly memorable or impactful travel photographs are the images that tell a story – images that go far beyond the “I was here” photograph.

Join award-winning photographer Mark Edward Harris as he discusses how to create fine art travel photography. Photographers will learn how to produce beautiful landscapes and townscapes, as well as powerful environmental portraits and photo essays. Mark will begin the day with a presentation of his own photographs and a discussion on how he achieved them. Students will then put these ideas into practice with a hands-on shoot session on Venice Beach, emphasizing technical aspects such as the use of “fast” lenses, filters and the creative use of flash on location. Following a group critique, a second shoot session will provide an opportunity for participants to refine and expand their imagery into more established photographs. The day culminates with Mark leading a discussion on how to approach newspapers and magazines with travel story ideas and how to bring individual projects to fruition.

Open to all levels of photographers with an interest in travel photography. Digital and film users are welcome.
