Shelby Lee Adams - Portraits: Exploring the Psychological, Emotional and Technical
This photographic workshop explores the psychological, emotional and technical aspects of portraiture, emphasizing photographing people in their environments. Establishing a collaborative dialogue with subjects opens communication between photographer and subjects, inviting the viewer’s participation. This triangular relationship
will be studied in Shelby’s work, emphasizing his long-term participant/observer relationship approach in Appalachia. Other contemporary photographers and cultural milieus will be studied using film and video clips, slides, interviews and some subjects' writings.
The workshop will include two full days of hands-on shooting assignments at locations within the nearby area. Models will be available for students to work with. Shelby reminds the workshop participants that this is a simulation exploring approach, relationship, composition, personal vision, intimacy and spontaneity while photographing human beings - challenging.
Technical emphasis will be on lighting with strobe location light kits during daylight, studying lighting ratios, metering with camera histograms and flash meters, and creating lighting ratios. In addition, applying the effects of light on the subject and
enhancing/de-emphasizing the background will be explored. Each student is asked to bring a portfolio of approximately 15 prints they wish to have critiqued in class. Developing one’s personal vision will be emphasized.
