 Instructors Description:

Robert is an enthusiastic naturalist, conservationist and educator employed by Cornell University as the Field Botanist (Research Support Specialist) at Cornell Botanic Gardens --- the arboretum, botanical garden and natural areas of the University.  He is also a Lecturer in Department of Natural Resources (Fall only), where he co-teaches Wetland Ecology and Management with Dr. Barbara L. Bedford.  In addition he is self-employed as an environmental consultant, field biologist, and nature and garden photographer.  He did his undergraduate work at Cornell University majoring in botany, but also concentrating in entomology and environmental education.  Robert has more than 35 years experience in biological field research, conservation, teaching and field photography.  His lifelong familiarity with the Finger lakes region and its biota and physical environment also contributes to his skill as a field biologist.

In the Natural Areas program at the Botanic Gardens, he monitors populations of rare or uncommon species, invasive or problem species and changes in vegetation over time.  He is able to perform biological survey work such as rare species monitoring, characterization of ecological community type, or wetland delineation quickly and efficiently because of his ability to identify so many species, particularly of vascular plants, very quickly.  He has served as an advisor and collaborator on biological conservation, vegetation management, and invasive species management issues for many local, regional and national groups and agencies.  Among these are: Tompkins County Planning Department, Tompkins County Environmental Management Council, Town of Ithaca, City of Ithaca, Monroe County Parks Department, Finger Lakes Land Trust, New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, New York Natural Heritage Program, National Audubon, and the U. S. Forest Service.
